Preparation for Reiki Attunement

Information for Students Preparing for Reiki Attunement

Students often ask what they need to do to prepare for Reiki training and attunement.  I have therefore prepared this set of guidelines to help you prepare for receiving a Reiki attunement. These are simply guidelines and are optional however I do believe that if you follow them you will have an enhanced experience, especially if this is your first degree attunement.

Reiki differs from other energy modality treatments because it has an attunement process.  The attunement opens up your energy channels and allows you to experience the flow of Reiki energy which is already present within you.

It is therefore important that you come to the class with an open and relaxed frame of mind.  It can be helpful to detoxify your body beforehand but there is no need to go to any extremes.  Below are some suggestions and guidelines to help you de-stress, relax and detoxify before your attunement.  Stress can cause your energy to be blocked.  By doing a bit of mindful relaxation in the week prior, you will be much more receptive to the Reiki energy.

Guidelines to follow BEFORE your attunement
  • The week before the class try to spend at least 15-20 minutes every day meditating, doing deep-breathing exercises or being mindful.
  • Try to get outdoors at least once a day and walk or just ‘be’ in nature. Be attentive to what is in your surroundings and any sensations you may feel.
  • During the week before your class please try to limit excessive mindless violence or stressful TV programs, online articles, newspapers or other stressful occasions.
  • IMPORTANT - Please drink plenty of water.  Energy work can cause dehydration and it is therefore vital that your body is well hydrated.  Energy flows best in a well-hydrated body.  Try and drink 8 glasses a day.
  • If possible try to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • If you can, try to avoid or limit your intake of caffeine, processed foods and alcohol for the 3 days prior to the class.  If you smoke, please try to cut back or stop.  Toxins can negatively impact energy flow.  It is important on the day of your attunement to avoid them entirely.
  • Some Reiki Master Teachers recommend that you also avoid meat (especially red meat) and/or heavy meals several days or at least 24 hours before your attunement.  It is not necessary but if you usually find yourself sluggish after eating meat or heavy meals then it is advisable to keep your meals as light as possible for a day or two before the attunement so you are feeling well and energised. 
Guidelines for the day of the class 
  • Please wear comfortable clothes.  Feel free to bring a jumper or wrap if it is cold and wear socks to keep your feet warm as you may wish to remove your shoes during the attunement process or for comfort.
  • Light refreshments will be provided but please feel free to bring along anything you wish especially if you have any specific dietary requirements.  If you have any food allergies please let me know beforehand so I can ensure a safe environment for you.
  • My classes are run in an informal, conversational fashion and questions and interaction are encouraged.  I will aim to answer all your questions and if I don’t know an answer, I will find out for you!
  • There will also be the opportunity to practice using Reiki on yourself and others after your attunement.  This is the time to ask questions and I do not want you to leave the class without having experienced the energy flow.  
After your attunement 

For 21 days after the attunement you must commit to practising the daily self-treatment techniques that you will be shown in class – this is very important and will build your confidence in using Reiki.

Also if possible, try to find willing friends, family and pets if you have them to practice with.  The more you use Reiki the more you will experience the energy and the benefits of it.

As you use the energy you may find you have additional questions.  As your Reiki Master Teacher I am here to answer or discuss any of these questions or concerns with you.  Simply email or call me and I will do my best to answer them for you.  I will follow up with you after your attunement anyway but please feel free to contact me with anything you want to discuss about Reiki.

IMPORTANT – keep your water intake up – as you use Reiki on a daily basis you will notice that you naturally require more water.  This is a good thing.

Reiki is a very rewarding and spiritual experience.   Enjoy it and all the experiences it brings into your life. 

First degree Reiki is your starting point on the wonderful journey with Reiki – may it bring you blessings.  If this is your second degree may you find your deeper knowledge and experience even more beneficial and please commit to using Reiki every day.  If this is your Master attunement then you should already know the wonderful benefits of daily Reiki use, please continue to embrace it and I will be happy to work with you to help guide you as you progress to teaching others.
